Jewish and Christian
Theology
with Ali Ataie, PhD
This course offers a rigorous and comparative exploration of core theological claims …
… within Judaism and Christianity, focusing on the articulation of faith, the nature of God, and the identity of the Messiah. Students will begin by examining the thirteen principles of Jewish faith as formulated by Maimonides, exploring their historical context, philosophical foundations, and enduring significance within Jewish thought. Each principle will be studied in detail, with attention to themes such as divine unity, revelation, prophecy, and eschatological hope.
A unique opportunity to enjoy one-one-one tuition and live interaction with top expert Dr Ali Ataie
The course then turns to early Christian formulations of belief, centering on the Nicene Creed. Students will analyze its historical development in the context of early church debates, particularly concerning the nature of Christ and his relationship to God the Father. Close reading of the creed will be paired with an examination of the controversies that shaped it, including questions of divinity, incarnation, and orthodoxy.
Throughout the course, students will compare and contrast Jewish and Christian approaches to monotheism, revelation, and salvation. Emphasis will be placed on careful textual analysis, historical context, and philosophical clarity. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of how these traditions articulate their most fundamental beliefs and how those beliefs continue to shape religious thought and dialogue.
A central component of the course is the study of Christology in the canonical Gospels. Students will engage the texts of the Gospel of Matthew, Gospel of Mark, Gospel of Luke, and Gospel of John, analyzing how each presents the identity, mission, and authority of Jesus. Particular attention will be given to titles such as “Son of Man,” “Messiah,” and “Son of God,” as well as to the ways in which these texts have been interpreted in both historical and theological contexts. The course also includes a sustained exploration of the doctrine of the Trinity, tracing its development from scriptural roots through early theological reflection. Students will examine key conceptual distinctions—such as person and essence—and consider the philosophical challenges posed by Trinitarian claims about divine unity and plurality.
Invite ˹all˺ to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and kind advice, and only debate with them in the best manner. Surely your Lord ˹alone˺ knows best who has strayed from His Way and who is ˹rightly˺ guided. (Q: 16:125).
